There is a significant amount of research surrounding the use of ozone (O3) for chronic pain.

Ozone (O3) is activated oxygen (O2) which consists of three oxygen atoms all sharing the same electrons. Ozone is a very unstable molecule which is why it is so powerful. Ozone is generated by passing pure, medical grade oxygen through a tube in which energy is directed. This generates ozone as a clear, gaseous, powerful molecule. Ozone therapy is effective for pain relief and regeneration as it reverses poor oxygen utilization within the body.

This happens through the formation of ozonides (when ozone comes into contact with lipids and amino acids) which increase the NAD/NADH ratio. Oxygen utilization appears to be the single most important determinant of health, aging and degenerative disease. Oxygen utilization does naturally decline with age but is commonly found in young, otherwise healthy appearing adults. In summary, Oxygen-Ozone therapy can work as an anti-inflammatory, painkiller, circulation enhancer and tissue repair mechanism.

Ozone injections have been researched for the following musculoskeletal disorders:

  • Lumbar facet joint syndrome
  • Low Back Pain
  • Shoulder bursitis
  • Shoulder adhesive capsulitis
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Hip bursitis
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Tennis Elbow
  • Herniated disc, and
  • Temporomandibular joint disorder

Effectiveness in temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder

The researchers found that the use of ozone therapy has been more effective than medication therapy in patients with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder and high pain scores. Ozone was found to relieve pain and increase the maximum voluntary interincisal mouth opening values. They speculate that ozone gas promotes new cartilage growth as well as reduces inflammation.

Effectiveness for herniated disc

Ozone was found to dehydrate the disc and lessen the bulge pressing on the nerves. Ozone therapy also had analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects in treating disc herniation. In a 2017 study, researchers reported that patients who can benefit the most from ozone are patients with back pain with or without radicular pain but without motor deficits, which have been non-responsive to 4-6 weeks of conservative therapies. They found results could be achieved by dehydrating or shrinking the disc.
